Generally speaking, most logging companies and timber assessors consider hardwood the "cream of the crop" in terms of value. Hardwood examples are oak, ash, elm, maple, walnut, hickory, cherry, willow etc.

Due to the time consumption and low market value of softwood (exaple; pine, hemlock, cedar, cypress, douglas-fir etc.) these species sometimes are not even included in most loggers contracts with land owners or will be classified as "stumpage" and you will recieve pennies on the dollars for the true value of the harvest of ALL of your softwood. Therefore, in simple terms, YOU lOOSE money.
